Cloud Storage Comparison: Google Drive vs OneDrive vs iCloud

Choosing cloud storage in 2025 feels way more complicated than it should be. You've got Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Apple iCloud all competing for your files and honestly they're all pretty similar but also different enough to matter depending on what you need.

I've used all three at different points and each one has it's strengths and annoying quirks. Let me break down what actually matters so you can pick the right one without spending hours researching like I did.

Storage Plans and Pricing (The Part Everyone Cares About Most)

Google Drive gives you 15GB free which sounds great until you realize that includes Gmail and Google Photos. If you take a lot of photos or have years of emails, that space disappears fast. Their paid plans start at $1.99/month for 100GB, $2.99 for 200GB, and $9.99 for 2TB.

OneDrive only offers 5GB free which is honestly pretty stingy in 2025. But here's the thing - if you have Microsoft 365 (the subscription for Office apps), you get 1TB included which is actually a great deal. Standalone plans are $1.99/month for 100GB or $6.99 for 1TB.

iCloud also starts with 5GB free and their pricing is $0.99/month for 50GB, $2.99 for 200GB, and $9.99 for 2TB. The cheapest option among the three if you only need a little extra space.

So for free storage, Google wins. For value if you already pay for Microsoft 365, OneDrive is unbeatable. For cheap upgrades, iCloud's 50GB plan is the most affordable entry point.

Integration and Ecosystem (This Is Actually Huge)

Google Drive works best if you live in Google's world - Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Android phones. The integration is seamless and you can edit documents right in your browser without downloading anything. Sharing files is super straightforward and collaboration features are honestly really good.

OneDrive is obviously built for Windows and Microsoft Office users. If you're already using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, OneDrive just makes sense because everything syncs automatically. The Windows integration is so tight that it basically feels like a regular folder on your computer.

iCloud is the obvious choice if you're all-in on Apple devices. iPhone, iPad, Mac - everything syncs automatically without you thinking about it. But if you're on Windows or Android, the experience is pretty clunky and limited. They have Windows apps but they're not great if we're being honest.

Here's my take - pick based on what ecosystem you're already in because fighting against it is just gonna frustrate you.

File Sharing and Collaboration Features

Google Drive dominates here. Sharing files with specific people or making them public is easy, you can set different permission levels, and the collaboration tools in Google Docs are better than the competition. Multiple people can edit simultaneously and you can see changes in real-time.

OneDrive has solid sharing features and the Office 365 collaboration is good, especially for professional documents. The integration with Teams makes it useful for work environments. But it's not quite as intuitive as Google's approach in my experience.

iCloud is fine for sharing photos and basic files but the collaboration features are pretty basic compared to the others. You can share folders and files but it feels more like an afterthought than a core feature.

If collaboration is important, Google Drive wins easily. If you're mostly storing files for yourself, this matters less.

Upload and Sync Speed

From my testing (which wasn't super scientific, just real-world use), Google Drive and OneDrive are pretty comparable - both fast and reliable. Sync happens quickly and I rarely have issues with files not updating.

iCloud can be slower sometimes, especially on non-Apple devices. I've had moments where files took forever to sync between my iPhone and Windows PC. On Apple devices it's fine though.

All three have improved a lot over the years so unless you're uploading massive files constantly, you probably won't notice huge differences.

Security and Privacy Concerns

All three use encryption and have decent security but there's differences worth knowing about.

Google encrypts your data in transit and at rest, but they do scan files for policy violations and use your data for ad targeting across their services. If privacy is your top concern, that might bother you.

Microsoft also encrypts everything and has strong enterprise-level security. They're generally better about privacy than Google since their business model isn't advertising-based.

Apple positions themselves as the privacy-focused option and they're probably the most locked down of the three. They use end-to-end encryption for most data and claim they can't access your files even if they wanted to.

If privacy matters most, iCloud has the edge. If you trust Google or Microsoft anyway, it's probably not a dealbreaker.

Mobile Apps and Accessibility

Google Drive has excellent apps on both iOS and Android. Everything works smoothly and the interface is clean and intuitive.

OneDrive apps are also solid on both platforms. Microsoft has actually done good work making their mobile apps feel native rather than like awkward ports.

iCloud works perfectly on iOS but the Android experience is basically nonexistent and even the Windows experience isn't great. If you're not in the Apple ecosystem, accessing your iCloud files from mobile is frustrating.

Which One Should You Actually Choose?

Choose Google Drive if you use Gmail, Google Docs, or Android devices. The free storage is generous and the collaboration features are unmatched.

Choose OneDrive if you use Windows and Microsoft Office, especially if you already pay for Microsoft 365. The included 1TB makes it the best value.

Choose iCloud if you're all-in on Apple devices and want everything to just work automatically. But if you use any non-Apple devices regularly, seriously consider one of the others.

Honestly you can't go wrong with any of them - they're all reliable and do the basic job well. The decision mostly comes down to what devices and apps you already use. Go with whatever fits your existing setup and you'll be happy with it.

And hey, you're not locked in forever. You can always switch later if you change your mind, just download your files and upload them somewhere else. It's annoying but definitely possible.
